Continuous heavy rainfall since late Saturday night has disrupted normal life across Uttarakhand, with significant damage reported in the Kargi Grant area of Dehradun, where two houses collapsed near a riverbank. While no casualties have been reported so far, authorities remain on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the state over the next two days.
According to police, both houses were severely damaged by the downpour, which intensified overnight and continued into Sunday. Emergency response units from Kotwali Patel Nagar Police and the Fire Service reached the spot immediately after locals reported the incident. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Singh and SP City Pramod Kumar inspected the site and monitored rescue efforts.
As a safety measure, at least 10 houses in the vicinity were evacuated. Personnel from the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) have been deployed to manage the situation and assist affected residents. “All police teams are maintaining high alert to respond to emergencies,” SSP Singh said.
Elsewhere in the city, a portion of the road near the Malsi Zoo culvert collapsed due to persistent rain, prompting authorities to install barricades and redirect heavy vehicles. Tourists traveling to Mussoorie have been advised to use alternative routes.
The IMD has forecast further heavy to very heavy rainfall across multiple districts, with Dehradun, Tehri, and Pauri among the areas expected to be most affected. The state administration has urged residents in vulnerable zones to remain indoors and cooperate with local authorities as weather conditions remain unstable.
