Uttarakhand Vigilance Nabs Kalsi Patwari Taking Bribe; Swallows Cash To Destroy Evidence

A vigilance team in Uttarakhand arrested a revenue official posted in Kalsi on Monday after he was caught accepting a ₹2,000 bribe for issuing domicile and caste certificates.

In an unusual turn, the accused, Patwari Gulshan Haider, allegedly attempted to destroy evidence by swallowing four ₹500 notes, officials confirmed, reported Amar Ujala.

According to Vigilance Director Dr. V. Murugesan, the trap was set following a formal complaint. The complainant stated that his cousins had applied online for domicile and caste certificates, which were unexpectedly rejected.

The Patwari demanded photocopies of ID cards and ₹2,000, instructing them to meet at the tehsil office on Monday.

Acting on the complaint, the Dehradun vigilance sector team set up surveillance and arrested Haider red-handed in a private room of the tehsil office while he was accepting the bribe. Soon after being caught, the Patwari swallowed the four notes to hide the evidence, said a vigilance official.

He was immediately taken to the local PHC in Kalsi, where doctors advised further investigation. The team transported him to the Sub-District Hospital in Vikasnagar for an ultrasound scan, but no currency was visible in the stomach. Radiologists then recommended an endoscopy to verify internal concealment.

Following a medical examination, Haider was taken to Dehradun for further legal and medical procedures. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against him.
