A wave of violent crimes perpetrated by individuals from neighboring states has prompted Uttarakhand police to launch Operation Lagaam, intensifying background verification drives across the Garhwal division following widespread public anger.

The crackdown comes after multiple incidents within a week, including the murder of a 25-year-old local man by a poclain machine operator in Pauri Garhwal, who remains absconding. Inspector General of Garhwal Range Rajeev Swaroop announced the operation to address escalating violence and road rage incidents, TOI reported.

“The state is known as Devbhoomi — abode of gods — and we will not allow anyone to disturb its peaceful environment,” Swaroop told reporters. All district police units received instructions to intensify verification drives and take firm action against accused individuals.

Dehradun police arrested three men from Haryana and Delhi Saturday for allegedly attacking a merchant navy officer’s vehicle after it overtook theirs on May 30. The incident occurred on a busy road, highlighting growing concerns about road rage among visitors.

In Srinagar, Pauri Garhwal, seven Punjab residents were arrested for allegedly assaulting locals with swords after being asked not to create disturbances. The sword attack particularly alarmed residents about the severity of violence escalating in the region.

Local residents expressed frustration over inadequate background screening processes. “What is happening in the past few days in the city and other parts of the state is completely unacceptable,” said Umesh Dhyani, a Dalanwala resident. “We never have problems with tourists visiting our state, but the kind of activities they are indulging in against locals can never be tolerated.”

Dhyani emphasized the need for strict enforcement measures against perpetrators while maintaining Uttarakhand’s welcoming stance toward legitimate visitors.

Operation Lagaam specifically targets road rage and related violent incidents, which have shown concerning increases recently. The campaign represents authorities’ commitment to maintaining peace in the hill state while ensuring visitor accountability through enhanced verification protocols.
