Uttarakhand Drenched By Pre-Monsoon Showers; IMD Issues Yellow Alert, Warns Of More Mayhem

Uttarakhand is experiencing widespread rainfall across several districts, including Nainital and Dehradun, as pre-monsoon showers continue to sweep the region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning in hilly districts, warning of unstable weather and the potential for further disruptions through the end of May, reported Zee News on Monday.

This spell of rain has brought a significant drop in temperatures—by as much as 10 degrees Celsius in some areas—offering relief from the intense summer heat and even causing a mild chill in higher altitudes.

The rain, accompanied by hailstorms and gusty winds, has been particularly intense in the Kumaon region, with Lohar Khet recording 75 mm of rainfall in a single day. Other areas such as Kathgodam, Pokhari and Dhari have also reported heavy showers.

Weather In Dehradun: In the city, the temperature has fallen by 8 degrees Celsius, while Mukteshwar and New Tehri have seen maximum temperatures of 16.7°C and 17.5°C, respectively and minimums dipping to around 10°C. Udham Singh Nagar recorded a maximum of 31.6°C and a minimum of 21.4°C, reflecting the broad cooling trend.

Cloud cover persists from the mountains to the plains, and the Char Dham Yatra routes are affected by intermittent showers and landslides, leading authorities to advise caution for travelers.

The Meteorological Department forecasts that light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds (30-40 km/h) will likely continue at many places across Uttarakhand, with isolated heavy rainfall expected in Nainital, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh later in the week. These pre-monsoon conditions are expected to persist until the official onset of the monsoon, with the yellow alert remaining in effect for the hilly districts.

Residents and pilgrims are urged to stay updated on weather advisories and remain vigilant, especially in landslide-prone areas, as the state navigates this active weather phase.
