On Monday, a special CBI court in Dehradun convicted BJP legislator Adesh Chauhan in a 2009 illegal detention case involving the alleged custodial intimidation of a man in a family dispute.
Chauhan, who represents Haridwar’s BHEL Ranipur constituency and has served as an MLA since 2012, was sentenced to six months in jail, reported The Indian Express.
The court also found his niece Deepika Singh and two then-serving police officers guilty in the case. The MLA has been granted bail.
What Is The Case: The case dates back to 2009, when Dheer Singh Chauhan, Deepika’s father-in-law, alleged he was unlawfully detained for 36 hours and coerced into transferring property and money to his daughter-in-law amid a dowry dispute.
He also accused the MLA and Deepika of fabricating evidence against him with the help of local police officers, who reportedly failed to register the incident officially.
After years of inaction, Dheer Singh filed a writ petition in 2019. The Uttarakhand High Court ordered a CBI investigation, leading to the filing of charges in 2022.
“TThis is a 2009 case. I have also gotten bail today, and we will go for an appeal,” Chauhan told the publication, adding that several BJP leaders have extended their support.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Suryakant Dhasmana criticized the BJP, demanding the party clarify its stance on the conviction, citing its frequent claims of integrity and transparency in public office, the report added.
