Trikal Whisky Not Approved In Uttarakhand, Excise Department Denies Manufacturing Or Sale

Amid growing outrage over the use of the name “Trikal” for a newly launched whisky brand, Uttarakhand’s Excise Department has firmly denied granting any permission for its manufacture, registration, or sale in the state.

Excise Commissioner Harichandra Semwal told ANI that the department has not issued any license or approval related to the brand, reported The Hindustan Times. Trikal whisky “has neither been allowed to be manufactured in the state, nor has any approval been granted for registration or sale,” he said, calling reports linking it to Uttarakhand “misleading and untrue.”

The clarification comes as images and promotional material for the whisky brand circulated on social media, sparking criticism from various quarters in the state. Many objected to the use of the term “Trikal,” which carries religious and spiritual significance in Hinduism, symbolizing the three dimensions of time—past, present, and future.

Officials noted that the brand appears to have been launched in other states and that no formal connection to Uttarakhand exists. They added that the matter has deeply hurt public sentiment and that the department is in the process of filing an FIR against those spreading false information online.

The Excise Department is committed to safeguarding the administrative system, cultural values, and public interest of Uttarakhand, a senior official said.
