Police Tighten Noose On Unverified Tenants In Dehradun: ₹2.9 Lakh Fines Slapped On Landlords, 20 Detained

Police in Vikasnagar and Sahaspur have intensified tenant verification efforts, targeting individuals from outside Uttarakhand residing in rented properties.

The crackdown led to fines worth ₹2.90 lakh being imposed on 29 landlords who failed to verify their tenants, officials said on Sunday, reported Amar Ujala.

According to Vikasnagar Kotwali in-charge Vinod Gusain, police conducted checks in areas including Dhakrani, Golghar, Paonta Road, Court Road and Bhimawala. A total of 300 individuals from other states were verified. Seven landlords who had not submitted tenant details were each fined ₹10,000. Additionally, 10 people were booked under the Police Act.

In a parallel operation, Sahaspur SHO Shankar Singh Bisht said tenant verification was carried out in Shankarpur, Choi Basti, Dharmanwala, Sabhawala and Singhniwala, where 230 people were checked. Here, 22 landlords were fined ₹10,000 each for non-compliance, and 15 individuals were booked under the Police Act.

Overall, the joint operation led to the verification of 530 people. Police detained 20 individuals for questioning and issued challans to 25 others under relevant sections.

SP (Rural) Renu Lohani said the campaign will continue across the district. Strict legal action will be taken against those found involved in any criminal activities. Landlords must comply with tenant verification norms to ensure public safety, she said.

The drive is part of a broader effort to tighten surveillance on unverified tenants and prevent illegal or criminal activity in semi-urban and border areas of Dehradun district.
