A 48-year-old man died on Tuesday when a tree, uprooted by a brief but intense spell of rain and wind, collapsed onto the vehicle he was traveling in near Ballupur flyover on Chakrata Road, police said.
The deceased, Arvind Lal, was seated in the middle row of the vehicle, which was en route from Dehradun to Barkot in Uttarkashi district when the incident occurred, reported The Hindustan Times.
He was rushed to Government Doon Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Another passenger suffered minor injuries, while the remaining occupants escaped unharmed.
The vehicle, significantly damaged in the accident, has been towed to the Basant Vihar police complex.
This marks the second fatal weather-related incident involving uprooted trees in Dehradun within a week. On Saturday, a woman was killed when a tree fell onto a parked vehicle during a storm.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement on whether preventive measures, such as tree inspections in storm-prone zones, are being considered. With pre-monsoon weather patterns intensifying across Uttarakhand, concerns over public safety due to aging and unstable trees in urban areas are growing.
Local residents have urged the municipal corporation to take swift action to assess tree safety across the city and mitigate risks during weather fluctuations.
