In a first for the city, an 18-wheeler automated parking facility became operational on Wednesday at Coronation District Hospital, marking a significant step by the Dehradun administration to tackle the worsening traffic and parking crunch in the state capital.
The initiative, led by the district administration, is part of a broader plan to decongest key urban centers by implementing automated parking systems. Alongside the Coronation Hospital installation, two other sites—Parade Ground and Tibetan Market—are set to follow, with capacities of 96 and 132 vehicles respectively. Trials at these two locations are currently underway and are expected to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in the coming days.
The newly launched parking system at Coronation is already being used by hospital doctors and nursing staff. A designated operator has been appointed to manage the machine’s day-to-day functioning. Authorities say the move is expected to ease the burden on patients and visitors struggling to find parking near the hospital.
“This initiative will help improve traffic in the city and will lay a road map for more such parkings across Dehradun, helping reduce traffic congestion,” said District Magistrate Savin Bansal.
The capital city of Uttarakhand has been grappling with rapid urban expansion, rising vehicle density, and limited infrastructure. These automated parking systems, which operate on vertical-lift mechanisms, are aimed at maximizing parking capacity within compact footprints—particularly crucial in high-density areas like hospital zones and marketplaces.
